Oleg Romanov is a classically trained tattoo artist known for large-scale realistic-graphic work, controlled whip shading and an engineering approach to every mark.

He created Romanov Rotary from the needs of his own daily practice—not as a product concept, but as the instrument he wanted to work with himself.

01 / Working philosophy

If a tattoo already feels large, it should probably be twice as large.

Oleg prefers compositions designed for an entire body part. Scale gives the image room to breathe and makes form, movement and hierarchy belong to the body rather than sit on top of it.

His whip shading is built around three priorities: cleanliness, concentrated detail and deliberate contrast—with every pass serving a clear, readable final image.

01Academic foundation

Oleg received a higher art education and qualified as a teacher of art and technical drawing. He trained in academic drawing, painting and sculpture within the Russian academic tradition associated with the Repin school.

02Fine art, exhibitions & festivals

An Artists' Union member and classical drypoint printmaker, Oleg has participated in an All-Russian fine art exhibition with his drypoint work. In 2019 he presented a pioneering solo exhibition devoted to tattoo work. His international tattoo-festival experience includes the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and Russia.

03Independent product design

Before Romanov Rotary, Oleg designed a battery power supply integrated into a tattoo-machine grip entirely from the ground up and secured a patent for the invention. The same practice-led approach later shaped Romanov Rotary.

Oleg's method combines clean composition, concentrated detail and purposeful contrast. Whip shading is the controlled system that connects them.

Clean structure

Every large piece begins with a readable composition. Form, rhythm and tonal hierarchy are resolved before decorative detail.

Detail & contrast

Detail is supported by deliberate contrast, not visual noise, so the tattoo remains clear at a distance and rewarding up close.

Controlled whip shading

Needle depth, hand speed, voltage and grouping work as one system to build clean gradients, texture and lasting depth.

Romanov Rotary grew out of Oleg's own whip shading practice. The fixed 5 mm stroke, direct response and low-voltage control are not abstract specifications—they answer problems he encountered in the skin.

01What projects are the best fit?

Large realism or realistic-graphic pieces built with whip shading. Subjects are flexible; the priority is a composition designed for a complete body area such as a sleeve, back, leg or chest.

03How are guest sessions planned?

A typical session lasts 5–6 hours—a comfortable working window for both artist and client. Multi-session projects are planned before travel so the scale, placement and schedule are clear.
